Heavy snow in the mountains; wind warning issued for tonight

I-70 was snowpacked at Vail

DENVER – Light rain and snow showers are expected to end around midday in the metro Denver area. However, heavy snow will continue to fall in the mountains.

A High Wind Warning is in effect for the foothills west to Summit County from 9:00 p.m. tonight until 9:00 a.m. Wednesday.  Wind gusts of 70-80 mph are possible for places like Genesee, Evergreen, Idaho Springs, Georgetown, and Breckenridge.

Winter Storm Warning is in effect for much of the mountains with 10-20” of snow possible for places like Vail and Aspen.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the North Central Mountains including Winter Park, Eisenhower Tunnel, Dillon, and Breckenridge.  The warning and advisory are in effect until midnight.

Blowing snow is likely near Eisenhower Tunnel and in Summit and Grand Counties.   An Avalanche Warning is in effect for the Northern and Southern San Juan Mountains.

Stay out of the backcountry.
