Police set up Santa Fe blockade after firing on suspect barricaded in building

UPDATE, 1:02 PM: The standoff at 3rd and Santa Fe with this suspect is still ongoing, according to police, though there is some new information. Police have now reported that the suspect has released a hostage from the building where he is barricaded.
According to police, the hostage, who is now safe, is someone that the suspect knows.
UPDATE, 11:21 AM: Police report that they have evacuated several buildings in the area. They also confirm that officers believe they have the suspect confined to the lower floor of the building as they continue negotiations.
UPDATE, 10 AM: All information is current. Police are still dealing with the gunman in a building on Santa Fe that may or may not be vacant, the blockade is still ongoing and the listed schools below remain on lockdown.
DENVER — Officers exchanged fire with a suspect in a domestic disturbance before the suspect became barricaded inside a building, according to police
Denver Police confirmed that officers were responding to a domestic dispute near 803 West 3rd Avenue when a suspect shot at the officers and then fled into a two-story building near West 3rd Avenue and Santa Fe Drive.
Police confirmed that their officers did return fire, but there there appears to be no injuries as a result of the gunfire. Police do not know if the building where the suspect is hiding is vacant or not.
Commuters are advised to expect a heavy police presence and traffic delays along Santa Fe north of I-25 Wednesday morning, as a result of this incident. There is currently a police blockade set up on Santa Fe from West 1st Avenue to West 4th Avenue.
Police have also confirmed that three nearby schools are on lockdown as authorities deal with this situation. Those schools are Fairmont Elementary School at 520 West 3rd Avenue, Denver Center for International Studies Middle and High School at 574 West 6th Avenue and ACE Community Challenge School at 948 Santa Fe Drive.
