It may come as a shock to some folks. Our food does not come from the grocery store.
“It comes from farms just like this. All over the world,” says Joe Miller of Miller Farms in Platteville, Colorado.
And if folks are willing to get a little down and dirty, they can harvest their own bounty, for pennies on the dollar.
It’s Miller Farms Fall Harvest Festival. “They’re actually going go out and harvest it themselves. They have to get down in the dirt and pick it. They’re welcome to bring a shovel if they like. Get out there, get dirty and get their food,” says David Patterson, operations manager at the farm.
Adrienne Stengel from Aurora likes the economics of the experience. “I picked some of the herbs and things and froze them. We can dice up potatoes and freeze them. So, absolutely, it is a savings.”
Picking your own green can save you a lot of green. Five grocery size bags full of vegetables picked, by you, for $15. That’s about a $65 savings over the grocery store. And it doesn’t get any fresher.
