Denver police: Serial groping suspect arrested
DENVER — Police announced Tuesday night they arrested a suspect they believe is responsible for numerous groping incidents in the metro area.
Police identify him as 26-year-old Juan Hernandez Vargas. He had a traffic warrant out for his arrest. However, investigators say he used numerous aliases, so they’re trying to sort that out and looking further into his background.
“Officers arrested the man as a result of an undercover surveillance operation conducted over the past several weeks,” says Denver police spokesman Det. John White.
Vargas is suspected in at least seven incidents where women have been fondled on the street.
The most recent incident happened Sunday. The victim in that case was a young girl.
The suspect first struck August 25 in the Denver Country Club neighborhood. Police say he ran up behind a woman walking down the street and groped her. Another woman was attacked just a few minutes later.
Another woman told police the same thing happened to her on August 28 near 37th Ave. and Newton St. Then it happened again near Washington Park.
That time, police say, he sped away in his car, covering his license plate so no one could see it.
Investigators became more alarmed when the suspect attacked his seventh victim on Sunday because the victim was a young girl.
