Suspect crashes vehicle in chase near Monument; police close I-25, pursue on foot

MONUMENT, Colo. — A vehicle wanted in connection with a shooting and assault case in Colorado Springs was involved in a high-speed chase with the Colorado State Patrol south of Castle Rock on Saturday night.

When that chase ended in a wreck, one suspect fled on foot. As of 7 p.m., five different law enforcement agencies were pursuing him.

According to Castle Rock police, emergency notification phone calls were sent out to residents within a three mile radius of where the high-speed vehicle chase ended — the Tomah Road exit off of I-25.

The vehicle that sparked the chase, a green Honda sedan, is wanted by the Colorado Springs Police Department in a shooting and assault case. That police department, along with the Colorado State Patrol and Castle Rock, Douglas County and Monument police departments were involved in the initial chase, which began near Monument at mile marker 159 and continued north along I-25 until the car crashed near the Tomah Road exit.

Five individuals were inside the vehicle, according to police. Despite being held at gunpoint, the driver, described as a black male wearing a white tank top and black jeans, fled the scene on foot. The four other occupants were taken into custody.

Police closed I-25 in both directions just south of Tomah at approximately 7 p.m. as the foot pursuit began. As of 7:30 p.m., southbound lanes were reopened, but northbound lanes remained closed.
