AURORA, Colo. — A police chase that started in Denver ended in a crash and police shooting the suspect along I-225 in Aurora Friday night.

The suspect was wanted for shooting at officers in Denver on Tuesday and Westminster on Wednesday.

Paramedics took him to the hospital. Information about his condition was not released. A Denver police officer was injured in the crash. He was not hurt badly and only required treatment at the scene.

Aurora police closed northbound I-225 at Iliff Ave. during the investigation. The cars were traveling at a high rate of speed on I-225 when the crash happened. The police car went through a guardrail and fence and ended up near S. Abilene St. and E. Florida Ave.

An Aurora police spokesman earlier said all officers were okay.

The spokesman identified the suspect as 33-year-old Larry Gomez. He had been under surveillance. Police said they followed him to an apartment complex where he dropped someone off. After that, he drove away and then realized he was being followed.

That’s when the chase started. It traveled southbound on I-225 when the suspect exited onto Iliff. He then jumped right back onto northbound I-225 where the chase came to a violent end just a few moments later.

Three Denver police cars and the suspect’s vehicle were all damaged in the crash.

Traffic was being diverted off the highway at the Iliff exit. Abilene, which runs parallel to the highway on the east side, was also closed at Jewell Ave.

Gomez faces charges including attempted murder of a police officer and aggravated motor vehicle theft.
