Authorities ID suspect involved in Saturday’s high-speed chase
LINCOLN, Colo. – The suspect that led police, deputies and troopers on a high-speed chase through eastern Colorado Saturday after stealing a car has been identified.
Authorities in Yakima, Wash. identified the suspect as 21-year-old Marcel Maldonado from Grandview, Wash.
The chase started at approximately 4 p.m. when a deputy from the Kit Carson County Sheriff’s Office tried to stop a silver Volkswagen that was headed westbound on I-70 near milepost 395. The suspect was reported armed and dangerous, according to Colorado State Patrol Corporal Heather Cobler.
The suspect did not stop for authorities, and deputies pursued the vehicle until Lincoln County deputies and Limon Police pursued the vehicle going westbound on I-70 at milepost 370. Again, the driver did not stop for authorities.
Colorado State Troopers located the Volkswagen after the driver stopped at a gas station in Deer Trail. Troopers attempted to talk to the suspect, and asked for assistance from Adams and Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Offices to saturate the area and maintain a close perimeter.
The suspect finally pulled into a driveway near Highway 36 and Calhoun Rd., just north of Byers, where the man was arrested and taken into custody.
Authorities in Yakima said that Maldonado is suspected of carjacking several vehicles prior to the stolen Volkswagen that police recovered after Saturday’s chase.
