Mother, 3 children hit by vehicle in Aurora

AURORA, Colo. — A mother and her three children were hit by a car in Aurora Monday night, police said.

The mother was trying to cross E. Exposition Avenue near S. Sable Boulevard and was carrying her 2-year-old child when she was hit by a Kia Rio, Lt. Chuck DeShazer of the Aurora Police Department. The other two children are 4-year-old twins and were walking next to her.

The mother and the 2-year-old were trapped under the car, which stopped immediately. Police said the driver, an off-duty Aurora police sergeant and several other good Samaritans lifted the passenger side of the car and removed the toddler and her mother, DeShazer said.

The mother has serious injures but is expected to survive. The 2-year-old had cuts to her head and legs. One of the twins had a bump on his head, and the other was not injured, police said.

Police said the four were not in a crosswalk and did not have the right-of-way.  The Rio was traveling around 30 mph and the speed limit on the road is 35, DeShazer said.

The driver of the vehicle will not be charged.
