Suspect who ran into Denver house surrenders after standoff

DENVER — A standoff in a southwest Denver neighborhood ended with the suspect surrendering to police Thursday night.

Police spokesman Sonny Jackson says the SWAT team entered the house and a K9 confronted the suspect, 25-year-old Robert Joseph Gomez. He sustained a dog bite and was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

Police were reportedly chasing Gomez in the 1300 block of W. Kentucky Ave. Thursday afternoon when he ran into a house and refused to come out.

Sources said there were two children in the house, but it was not confirmed if the children were ever with the suspect. A police officer brought children out of the house and reunited them safely with family members.

That happened at about 3:40 p.m.

Jackson says Gomez was wanted in a sexual assault case out of Arapahoe County. He will be returned there once he’s out of the hospital.

Police set up their mobile command post and closed about six blocks in the neighborhood to traffic during the standoff.
