WELD COUNTY, Colo. — Accidents involving 25 vehicles were causing traffic on Highway 85 to come to a standstill near Fort Lupton on Friday afternoon.
Colorado State Patrol spokesperson Josh Lewis said the accidents were caused by blowing snow and icy conditions, and that they resulted in two injuries serious enough that both injured parties were transported to nearby hospitals.
Lewis said the chain of wrecks began before 12:30 p.m., with the largest accident involving six to eight vehicles.
Highway 85 was completely shut down between Fort Lupton and Brighton due to the clean up efforts, and was still closed as of 1:30 p.m. Lewis did not give a timetable for the closure, but shortly after it was ordered at approximately 12:30 p.m., he said the highway may be shut down for “several hours.”
