Five badly injured in head-on crash
DENVER — A two-vehicle crash left five people seriously injured near Peyton Sunday afternoon, the Colorado State Patrol said in a media release.
A Volkswagen Jetta driven by Sarah Larocca of Peyton was traveling westbound on Jones Road about 12:20 p.m. when it traveled into the oncoming lane. The Volkswagen collided head-on with an eastbound Mazda 3 sedan.
Larocca, 25, and her two occupants — 27-year-old Evan Losee and a one-year-old child –suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Larocca and Losee were not wearing seatbelts, but the child was properly restrained at the time of the crash.
The Mazda’s driver, 53-year-old Sheldon Carster of Calhan, and his passenger, 52-year-old Connie Carson, also suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. They were wearing seatbelts. Both drivers had to be extricated from their respective vehicles.
Charges are pending against Larocca, CSP said. Excessive speed was considered a contributing factor in the crash, but alcohol and drug use were not.
Jones Road was closed for approximately 2.5 hours during the investigation.
