Tweaking your diet may help arthritis pain
DENVER — If you suffer from arthritis, joint pain and swelling, doctors say you may want to take a closer look at your diet.
It won’t be a cure, but there are foods that can help.
Dr. Jason Kolfenbach, an assistant professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, said he talks to his patients who suffer from arthritis about changing their diets.
“The products that are in plant oils and fish oils are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, and those types of products can be thought of almost as anti-inflammatories,” Kolfenbach said.
Foods that may help with inflammation include fatty fish, olive oil, nuts such as walnuts, and tart cherries, especially if the patient has gout. Patients with gout should also try to limit the amount of shellfish, red meat, alcohol and soda they take in.
Patricia Preciado changed her diet after she was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis.That switch, along with her medicine has made a big difference.
“I couldn’t drive, I couldn’t walk, I couldn’t button a shirt,” Preciado said.
She said that it wasn’t until after the change that she felt like herself again.
