Denver B-cycle program gets rolling today
DENVER — It’s a sign of spring — Denver and Boulder’s B-cycle bike sharing program starts Monday.
The program allows anyone to pick up a bike, ride it to another location, and just drop it off at one of 80 locations across the metro area.
In its fourth year, the program will add 27 new stations by this summer, extending the riding area from the Auraria campus to City Park and from the Highlands to the University of Denver.
Rider Sam Pike told FOX31 Denver he’d choose a bike over a car for commuting any day and added, “You can hear birds, you can hear the wind and feel the sun.”
The idea is to provide everyone with a chance to get out and exercise and lighten up the commute.
“You can see this long line of people waiting for a red light and I can just go oh, I’m good!” Pike said.
The program’s executive director, Parry Burnap, said demand for expansion has been incredible.
“It’s amazing it’s the opposite of the not in my backyard problem most people have, the issue we have is keeping up with the demand,” Burnap said.
This year, you’ll notice the Frontier logo on the bikes. The B-cycle program offers a new national collaboration called “B-Connected” that will allow annual members to check out bicycles at no extra charge in 14 cities around the country.
They include Madison, Wisconsin; San Antonio and Houston, Texas; Charlotte, North Carolina; Nashville and Spartanburg, Tennessee; Broward County, Florida: Honolulu, Hawaii; Des Moines, Iowa; Kansas City, Kansas; and Omaha, Nebraska. Fort Worth and Salt Lake City will become eligible this spring. Frontier flies directly to nine of the 14 cities.
Since the program started, B-cycle members have traveled more than a million miles, lost more than 21 million calories, saved more than 75,000 gallons of gas and avoided paying a million dollars in parking fees. Not a bad return on a sound investment in your good health.
The program is offering annual memberships at a discounted rate of $59 through Monday April 2. After that date, annual memberships will be $80.
Daily, weekly and monthly memberships are also available. Usage rates apply to all memberships and the first 30 minutes of every ride is always free
