DENVER — A large water main break slowed traffic on southbound I-25 near downtown Denver Thursday night.
The break was reported at about 7:00 p.m., and water could be seen all over the side of the highway. It shut down at least two lanes and caused a big traffic jam.
Denver Water spokesman Travis Thompson told FOX31 Denver that crews were at 29th and Zuni working to shut off water to the area. That is where the main flow of water originated.
The water poured down 29th from Zuni to Umatilla on to I-25. It filled the construction zone near the new 15th St. bridge on I-25.
Crews isolated the main and shut off the water around 10:30 p.m. 29th Ave. was closed between Zuni and Central streets. Customers along approximately seven blocks of 29th Ave. between Federal and Vallejo St. were without water.
Thompson says the pipes in that part of Denver are old. He also says repairs on the 24″ main were expected to last into at least Friday afternoon.
