Charges dropped against 85-year-old man accused in cane attack
John Copeland, 85, leaves a Denver court on Feb. 5, 2013, and explained he is not sure why he is still being charged with assault for a Stapleton parking lot dispute.
DENVER — The Denver District Attorney dismissed charges against an 85-year-old man accused of hitting a parking attendant with his cane.
Police arrested John Copeland late last year after a confrontation over a handicapped parking permit.
Copeland recently entered hospice care and the city is dropping the charges based on his medical condition.
“These charges never should have been brought and the D.A. in dismissing this case is doing the right thing and acting in the interest of justice,” says Copeland’s attorney, Siddhartha Rathod.
Copeland had no previous criminal record. His family says they appreciate the community support during this ordeal.
