Former Exempla chaplain pleads guilty to sexually assaulting disabled woman
LAFAYETTE, Colo. — Police say a man from Littleton confessed to having unlawful sexual contact with a disabled woman while he was working as a chaplain at the Exempla Good Samaritan Medical Center in Lafayette.
According to the Daily Camera, 57-year-old Katsutoshi Karl Shimada pleaded guilty last week to a misdemeanor charge of unlawful sexual contact and violation of a restraining order.
Shimada took a plea deal so that a felony charge of aggravated unlawful sexual contact was dismissed. He will receive a deferred sentence, but will have to register as a sex offender unless he successfully completes that sentence, according to the paper.
In May 2012, a Louisville woman told authorities Shimada engaged in inappropriate contact with her. Court documents show that the woman, who is blind and has multiple sclerosis, met with Shamida while she was a patient at Exempla.
Shimada is due in court for sentencing on November 15. He is currently free on bond.
