Report: Air Force-Navy game will be played Saturday
DENVER — The Air Force-Navy and Army-Boston College football games will be played Saturday after receiving official approval by the Secretary of Defense on Wednesday, according to a report by ESPN
Air Force’s game at Navy in Annapolis, Md. was in jeopardy after the Defense Department temporarily suspended athletic competition at the service academies as a result of the budget impasse in Congress.
A source had told ESPN earlier Wednesday that the costs of the games would be completely taken care of by “non-government funding,” which comes from outside sources and are not approved through Congress.
Because of that — and the fact the games had long been planned — the teams will be permitted to play.
Air Force and Navy have played each other every year since 1972. Army plays at Boston College Saturday.
