Officials: Fire in the Highlands kills one person

DENVER — A fire at in the Highlands neighborhood killed killed one person late Tuesday night.
Crews were on the scene fighting the fire at 2637 West 24th Avenue. It was fully involved in fire when they first arrived at the 2-story masonry house.
Radio communications indicated they first believed it was an abandoned structure. But then firefighters said they found one fatality on the first floor of the house.
The home had boards over windows and neighbors say it was vacant, but they also said vagrants often went inside the house.
The identity of the person who died was not known late Tuesday night.
FOX31′s Tammy Vigil reported that a developer recently bought the house and one next to it from the nearby Riverside Baptist Church. Plans are to knock down the structures and build townhomes on the property.
