WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. — Police warned Xcel Energy customers to be alert about a scam targeting businesses.
Investigators say three restaurants in Wheat Ridge were contacted by a person identifying himself as a representative of Xcel Monday.
He demanded immediate payment for past due bills. “The impersonator said the bill could be paid by purchasing prepaid Visa or MasterCard’s from local convenience stores,” a statement from Wheat Ridge Police says.
All the businesses were suspicious and called police and Xcel Energy about the attempted scam.
Xcel has previously warned about these scams saying the energy company does not conduct business in this fashion.
FOX31 Denver did a story in June about this very same scam, in which one business owner wanted to make sure no one else became a victim. See that story here.
