Man sentenced to 48 years in prison for strangling girlfriend
EDGEWATER, Colo. — A man was sentenced Thursday to 48 years in prison for the 2010 murder of an Edgewater woman, the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office announced.
Earlier this year, Francisco Rojas Carbajal, 32, pleaded guilty to choking his live-in girlfriend to death in late December of 2010, officials said. The body of the victim, 41-year-old Julia Abarca, was found several days later at her home.
Investigators found that Carbajal spent $1,570 on Abarca’s debit cards in the days following her death.
Police identified Carbajal as a suspect in 2011, but were unable to locate him until June of this year.
In handing down the sentence for second degree murder and identity theft, the judge found that the use of the victim’s credit card at liquor stores following the murder illustrated a lack of remorse, he said.
