FORT COLLINS, Colo. — The driver of an ATV who crashed, killing his passenger and injuring himself while evading police, was charged with vehicular homicide and driving under the influence of alcohol, among other charges, Thursday.

Travis Ackerman was on an ATV on Mackinac Street near Timberline Road Nov. 18 around 1:20 a.m. when neighbors called police because of the noise of the ATV, said Drew Jurkofsky of Fort Collins police.

When an officer arrived and tried to talk with Ackerman, he sped off, Jurkofsky said. Near the entrance of the Dry Creek subdivision, Ackerman came across a roundabout, failed to turn properly, and rolled into the roundabout center median, police said.

Both he and a female passenger were ejected. Neither were wearing a helmet, Jurkfosky said.

The passenger, whose name has not been released, later died at a local hospital.

Ackerman, 29, suffered serious injuries but has recovered. Thursday he was arrested by deputies after toxicology results came back and a warrant for his arrest was issued.

Jurkfosky said Ackerman faces charges including felony vehicular eluding, felony vehicular homicide, driving under the influence of alcohol and several other misdemeanors.
