STERLING, Colo. — A 2-year old was tragically killed in a house fire that broke out in a Sterling home late Monday night, fire crews confirmed Tuesday morning.

According to Sterling Fire Chief Kurt Vogel, the fire was reported in the 100 block of State Street around 7:30 p.m. on Monday. When crews arrived on scene, Vogel said they found a 2-year-old boy in a house closet, not breathing.

The child was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Vogel said there were three other family members in the home that all got out relatively unscathed. The father suffered burn injuries to his hands, Vogel said, but that appeared to be the extent of it.

Crews were able to contain the fire to one room, and had it completely knocked down later on Monday night. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, in collaboration with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, Vogel said.
