WESTMINSTER, Colo. — Colorado drivers beware — a portion of the Boulder Turnpike will be off-limits for most of this week.

U.S. 36 is scheduled to be closed overnight in both directions at Sheridan Boulevard until Saturday. The closure will give crews time to demolish the old Sheridan Boulevard bridge and make the new bridge right next to it operational.

“Obviously any closure to U.S. 36 is impactful,” said Amy Ford, a Colorado Department of Transportation spokesperson. “We do this overnight because it’s the least amount of traffic then.”

Sheridan Boulevard was closed this past weekend at the turnpike to help prepare for the work this week.

One driver who stopped to look at the construction said the new bridge will help relieve traffic congestion on Sheridan.

“Oh yeah it’s always heavy,” said Mike Kenkel of Arvada. “If you have any hiccup up here then it backs up clear down to the bottom of the hill over there on 84th.”

CDOT is asking those who commute on U.S. 36 to plan ahead.

“We do ask people to consider alternate routes and again we’ll have [the highway] open in time for rush hour the next morning,” said Ford.
