BOULDER, Colo. — Three complaints have been filed by Boulder business owners stating that phone scammers pretending to be Xcel Energy employees targeted their businesses, said Boulder police on Friday.

Investigators said all three complaints had similar stories that began with a phone call claiming the customer’s utility account was past due and would be disconnected in the next few days. The business owners were then told to pay the bill immediately through a wire service or pre-paid debit card.

In one of the incidents, the caller asked to meet the business owner in person, said police.

The businesses received the calls on Jan. 15, 17 and 20, and then contacted police and Xcel to check their accounts.

So far, police reported that no one has fallen for the phone scams, but added that they want to make sure residents and other area businesses are aware.

Anyone with questions about their Xcel Energy account can contact Xcel Energy customer service at 1-800-895-4999 or customerservice@xcelenergy.com.
