Why a charge of $9.84 on your credit card is a sign your ID has been stolen
DENVER — The Better Business Bureau is warning consumers about a new technique used by identity thieves to determine if a stolen credit card number is legitimate.
The scam involves charging a small and seemingly innocuous amount onto a credit card. Recently the amount $9.84 has been used with a source as a website.
“The expectation is that many cardholders won’t notice the relatively small charge, and the credit card companies won’t go after such a minor sum,” the BBB said on a posting on their website.
While the $9.84 amount has been seen in recent weeks, it’s likely scammers will change to a different amount once word gets out.
The website belonging to the charge shows a generic page that claims to offer customer support and a “refund 100% of your last payment.”
Victims reported calling the support number and getting a verbal confirmation that the charge will be reversed. However, many of the scammers simply lie, hoping the consumer drops the issue.
“Contact your bank to report the charges and request a new credit card. Your card information has been compromised, and it’s likely scammers will be back for more,” the warning said.
The BBB suggests consumers protect themselves by constantly watching their credit card statements for unrecognized charges, report lost cards and incorrect charges immediately and request a new card if you see fraudulent charges.
