When the Colorado Avalanche won the Stanley Cup in 1996, the Broncos followed by winning their two Super Bowl titles.
There are a lot of football fans among the other pro teams in town, including Nuggets and Avs.
From the ice to the hardwood, the Nuggets and Avs are backing the Broncos.
“I think Peyton is going to have the game of his life,” said Avs captain Gabe Landeskog. Nuggets Guard Randy Foye is also a big fan of Peyton Manning.
Nuggets Head Coach Brian Shaw is from Oakland, he’s a Raiders fan, but cheers for the Broncos now when they’re not playing the Raiders. Shaw said, “I think anytime you have a team that has had the success that they have, it energizes the city and pulls everyone together.”
A sign hanging outside Pepsi Center shows the Nuggets and Avs support. it says “We Bleed Orange Too.”
“They’ve had such a good year and it’s great for this town to see them in the Super Bowl. It brings a lot of excitement to the fans here in Denver,” said Avalanche Head Coach Patrick Roy.
The Avalanche will be in New Jersey for the Super Bowl on Sunday. They are scheduled to play the New Jersey Devils on Monday.
Avs defenseman Erik Johnson is considering buying tickets to the big game, but most of the players plan to stay warm and watch the game on TV. “It would be cool to go, not many times you’re in the same city as where the Super Bowl is being played” said Johnson.
Foye wishes he could be home to watch the Super Bowl. He’s from New Jersey, and he’s cheering for Broncos Running Back Knowshon Moreno. “The town I live in now, Moreno played high school football there in Jersey. He’s a Jersey guy, so I’m always rooting for him.”
The energy around Denver is contagious, and the other teams are drawing inspiration from the Broncos success.
Shaw said, “It’s great for our team to see one of the other pro teams in town doing well. It kind of sets the standard for what you want to be.”
“Just seeing everything blue and orange and seeing the fans embrace those guys, that’s cool,” Foye said. “That’s why I’m out here every day just working as hard as I can so we can bring that same type of atmosphere to the basketball court.”
