NHTSA announces new initiatives to raise recall awareness
WASHINGTON — Manufacturers will be required to use a new, distinctive mandatory label on recall notices, announced the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety and Administration Tuesday.
The new mandate issued by NHTSA stated that, effective Tuesday, all companies are required to use a special label on mailings that notifies consumers of recalled vehicles and products.
The intent is to help consumers instantly identify when they receive a recall notice in the mail so they can take immediate action, said the NHTSA.
“Recalls only work if consumers are aware of them,” said Anthony Foxx, the U.S. transportation secretary. “This new label will allow consumers to quickly recognize recall notices mailed to their homes so they can act quickly to get their vehicles, child restraints, tires or other motor-vehicle equipment fixed.”
The new safety recall notice label is one of several new strategies the NHTSA plans to roll out to improve recall awareness, said Tuesday’s release.
The department also launched an Android app Tuesday called the Android SaferCar app, which provides consumers access to cost-free, important safety information — the same app was released for iOS operating devices last year.
Other initiatives mentioned in the release included signing up to receive email notifications from the NHTSA when products like cars, tires and car seats are recalled, having recall push alerts sent to your phone through the app and using the search tool on the NHTSA’s website to check for recalls when purchasing a used vehicle.
NHTSA acting administrator David Friedman added, “By providing new and convenient tools for consumers, we hope to empower owners to take action to ensure their vehicles and loved ones are safe.”
