DENVER — The Colorado Department of Transportation announced it would implement metering along eastbound I-70 prior to the Eisenhower Tunnel Sunday in anticipation of heavy mountain traffic.
With record snowfalls reported by some ski resorts, CDOT said the wave escorts will help enhance commuter safety in the tunnel by allowing access for emergency personnel in the event of an incident.
If weather conditions along the I-70 mountain corridor become more severe, CDOT said it will enact wave escorts further down the mountain at Silverthorne.
After utilizing metering last weekend, CDOT said the safety tactic effectively kept traffic moving, which resulted in less delays along the interstate.
CDOT also encouraged motorists heading up to the High Country to be prepared for the possibility of a storm and stock vehicles with essentials like water, blankets, windshield wiper fluid, hand warmers and nonperishable food items.
