BOULDER, Colo. — The University of Colorado – Boulder will close its campus to non-affiliates on April 20 to avoid unwanted 4/20 gatherings, the university announced Thursday.

Through a statement posted on the university’s website, Philip P. DiStefano, CU Boulder chancellor, said the university will shut down on the infamous date for the third year in a row.

From noon to 6 p.m. on April 20, CU faculty, staff and students will be required to show their Buff OneCards to security staff, said DiSrefano.

He added that all faculty, staff and student are welcome on campus, but the goal is to kept unauthorized individuals from entering school grounds and causing a disturbance because of the day.

However, the Norlin Quad will be closed to everyone, said DiStefano.

He also asked those who have official business on that day to obtain a visitor’s pass before entering campus.

“It is imperative that the public knows we are serious about eliminating this disruptive gathering,” said DiStefano. “I hope at some point in the near-future that campus closures will not be necessary, and we can go about daily business on campus as we normally do.”
