Loveland man arrested in shooting of police officer

LOVELAND, Colo. — A man from Loveland was arrested Tuesday night in the shooting of a Loveland police officer Sunday.

Loveland Police say Cody Alan Powell, 23, turned himself in.

Powell turned himself into Fort Collins police.  He’s under arrest for investigation of attempted first-degree murder of a peace officer and first-degree assault.

Officer Garret Osilka, 36, a member of the police force’s SWAT team, was shot during a traffic stop Sunday night at 17th Street and N. Wilson Avenue.

An adult observer was riding with Osilka at the time, but was not hurt.

Osilka was wounded, but able to return fire, police said.

The shooter left in a blue Jeep, which was found abandoned hours later.

Osilka was taken to a hospital in serious condition. Police said that while his injuries were serious, he is expected to survive.

He remained in the intensive care unit on Tuesday.
