Rescuers search for missing avalanche victim in southwest Colorado
LA PLATA COUNTY, Colo. — The search continued Thursday for a snowmobile rider who was caught in an avalanche Wednesday in southwest Colorado.
Five snowmobilers were caught in the snowslide. Four of them were able to dig themselves out. They escaped with minor cuts and scrapes according to the Durango Herald.
The avalanche happened in the La Plata Mountains near Sharkstooth Peak.
The size of the slide is estimated at 100 yards wide and three-fourths of a mile long. It’s at 10,500 feet on the northeast side of Sharkstooth.
The Herald reports rescuers found a snowmobile with a probe eight feet under the snow and the debris flow is estimated to be 30 feet deep.
A spokesman says all five men were wearing avalanche beacons. Rescuers have not encountered an emergency signal.
The search area is in steep terrain where the snowpack is described as unstable.
