Cañon City police arrest man suspected of triple homicide

CAÑON CITY, Colo. — Police in Cañon City have arrested Jaacob Vanwinkle as a suspect in a triple homicide Sunday night.

Vanwinkle, 31, faces three counts of first-degree murder, three counts of kidnapping, sexual assault and sexual assault on a child by a person in position of trust. He will be arraigned later Monday.

A mother and two children, a 9-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy, were killed. Police responded to a report of sexual assault by a teenage girl in the 1100 block of Phay Avenue when they discovered the bodies.

A teenage girl who was sexually assaulted was able to get out of the house.
