DENVER – Thursday marks the unofficial start of bicycling season. There’s an easy new way to find Colorado’s beautiful bike paths.
Colorado has great bike paths and trails, and biking is an excellent way to stay in shape. It’s important to give your family a quick refresher on how to stay safe before you get started.
You’ll soon start seeing recreational riders checking out those B-cycles, or more intense riders keeping up with the traffic.
You want to stay alert and make sure drivers know you are there. The Denvergov.org website’s Bicycling in Denver page offers a great lineup of tips you can share with your kids.
It’s important to obey traffic signals, know hand signals for turning and wear protective gear. You should also be aware of the safest and quietest places to ride with your family. That’s where a new app comes in.
The state Department of Transportation’s new app makes it easy to check out its bike and byways map. It’s on the CDOT website.
The app gives you more details about things such as traffic volume and how much space you’ll have when you ride on specific routes.
You’ll also find information on how to find bike shops, restaurants and welcome centers. You can even get point-to-point directions and street views with alerts about road closures and detours.
Don’t forget to stay safe with a helmet, wear bright clothing or reflectors and take plenty of water. Also, beginners should start with short distances and install the right seat to prevent injuries.
