Hydration waters are gaining in popularity, but do you need them?

DENVER — From drops that sweeten your water without the added calories to the natural sweetness of coconut water, there are great options out there if you want to quench your thirst while cutting the calories.

Health experts say the key to getting the most benefit is knowing exactly what you’re getting, and whether you really need what’s inside.

Plant waters like coconut, birch and maple are joining energy and protein drinks on grocery store shelves.

Natural living expert Chelsea Vurciaga says it’s a $100 million dollar a year industry and adds that coconut water has a special appeal. It’s high in potassium and often called “Mother Nature’s sports drink.”

“This is a whole different way to hydrate your body because beyond getting the liquid support you’re also getting the benefits of all these powerful nutrients,” Vurciaga said.

Doctors say before you choose any drink to rehydrate or just provide an energy boost make sure you check the labels first. Many of these items have more calories and carbohydrates than you may think.

Health experts also say if you don’t work out like a pro athlete, you may not need an electrolyte replacement drink.

A healthy diet that includes fruits and vegetables will provide hydration, and don’t forget the old standby, six to eight glasses of plain water a day.
