THORNTON, Colo. — Two men were seriously injured and taken to a hospital Friday morning after exchanging gunfire over illegal dumping, Thornton Police said.
The shooting happened in the 9300 block of Cedar Court, just off Eppinger Boulevard around 10:20 a.m., police spokesman Matt Barnes. The location is about six blocks east of Thornton Elementary School.
Barnes said the incident arose over some sort of illegal dumping in unincorporated Adams County. Police said the 47-year-old driver of a red Dodge pickup saw the dumping and followed a silver Toyota Camry to the 9300 block of Cedar.
It was there that the drivers of the two vehicles got into an argument, police said. Then a third person came out of a home to confront the driver of the Dodge, Barnes said.
“The confrontation escalated to the point where both individuals exchanged gun fire at each other,” he said.
When police arrived, they found a 32-year-old man with gunshot wounds outside the home.
The driver of the pickup truck had left the scene, firing his gun at the Camry, Barnes said.
He to a nearby fire station. From there he was taken to a hospital for treatment, police said.
Barnes said both injured men were listed in serious/critical condition.
