Parents defend decision to take rescued 1-year-old on long sailing trip
Parents of a sick 1-year-old who was rescued from a sailboat that broke down almost 1,000 miles off the Mexican coast, are now defending their choices to take their daughter on board.
Baby Lyra is now in stable condition after sailors helped her, her 3-year-old sister Cora and parents Charlotte and Eric Kaufman get aboard the USS Vandegrift Sunday morning.
The family set sail from Mexico two weeks ago, planning to cross the Pacific Ocean to New Zealand in a trip that was expected to last one year.
But Thursday they sent out a distress call to the Coast Guard after Lyra got an infection and rash, and they experienced mechanical problems with the boat.
The Kaufmans have released a statement saying, “We understand there are those who question our decision to sail with our family. But please know that this is how our family has lived for seven years.”
