Denver jury convicts man on 2001 sexual assault cold case
DENVER — A Denver jury this week convicted Eddie Simon on two counts of sexual assault on a woman from a cold case in 2001 thanks to DNA evidence used under Katie’s Law.
In February 2001, a 20-year-old woman was picked up by Simon and taken to a remote area of the old Lowry Air Force Base where she was sexually assaulted at knifepoint. She escaped, but no suspect was found at the time.
In 2013, Simon was arrested on felony drug charges. His DNA was taken and under Katie’s Law, it was found to be linked to the 2001 crime.
“Katie’s Law is making a difference in solving crime almost every day in Denver,” Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey said.
Simon will be sentenced June 16. He faces up to life in prison.
