MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates may be leaving to become the new police chief in Miami Beach, according to a report in the Miami Herald Tuesday night.

Miami Beach City Manager Jimmy Morales confirmed his intention to appoint Oates, a New York City Police Department veteran, to the job the Herald’s report said.

A spokesperson for Miami Beach also confirmed to WSVN in Miami that Oates is the city’s choice for police chief.

The Miami Beach mayor and commission must still approve the hiring of Oates.

Oates has been Aurora police chief since 2005. His department has been praised for its actions when the Aurora theater shooting happened in July 2012.
