Owner charged after neighbor, other dogs attacked inside home
DENVER — The owner of three dogs that allegedly broke into a Denver home and attacked a woman and her pets has been charged.
Karen Smith is facing three counts of leash law violation, three counts of bites, one count of damaged property and pending charge of having a pit bull, according to Denver Animal Control. One of the dogs will be evaluated Wednesday to determine if it’s a pit bull.
The incident happened Saturday night on South Winona Court in southwest Denver and the victim, Shirley Croffard, told KWGN she feels lucky to be alive.
The attack left Croffard bloodied, bruised and a lot of pain, and she has bandages all over her body.
“Honestly I thought I was going to die. I was screaming so loud I just wanted somebody to come and help me,” she says.
Her pets were left with stitches and bites after the mauling.
“It was just like watching a movie. They just came running out … they came running right into the living room,” Croffard says.
