DENVER — Saturday is National Drug Take Back Day, an even where anyone with old prescription drugs are encouraged to properly dispose of them.
The event was created to help raise awareness about the dangers of leaving expired drugs in the home or flushing them down the toilet.
According to Think About It Colorado, “medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse.”
Also, the traditional way to get rid of drugs — flushing them down the toilet — isn’t recommended because of the environmental harm, including threats to water quality.
Last October, Americans turned in 324 tons (over 647,000 pounds) of prescription drugs at over 4,114 sites operated by the DEA and its thousands of state and local law enforcement partners, the organization said.
