RTD unveils new Union Station train, bus depot (and it’s awesome)

DENVER — RTD showed off it’s new bus hub at Union Station in Lodo Friday.

The depot is scheduled to open May 11 and will replace Market Street Station as main hub for the transit system.

It’s a dramatic improvement over the Market Street Station and will offer riders a modern and beautiful space to wait for their ride.

The station will eventually serve as a central connection point for RTD’s existing light rail lines and the new commuter rail lines that will open in 2016. Riders from all over metro Denver will be able to connect to the trail line that will take them to Denver International Airport.

Union Station will also service the new Free MetroRide which will circle downtown Denver up and down 18th and 19th streets. It begins operation between Union Station and Civic Center Plaza at 16th and Broadway Monday, May 12.

The centerpiece of the depot is the $500 million  remodel of Union Station, which is expected to be finished and open to the public in mid-July. Union Station will feature restaurants, shops and a hotel. Passengers will pass through it on their way into Lodo.

RTD will have a celebration of the new concourse on May 9 when the public can wander the site and explore. Bus operations at Union Station will begin on Sunday, May 11.
