DENVER — You’ve heard of whistling while you work, how about walking while you work?
Brad Cooper, a Littleton wellness company CEO, uses a treadmill desk to keep moving while working at home.
The idea is to avoid being sedentary for hours, like millions of people who sit at work, while driving and at home while relaxing.
Cooper said the desk is fully functional.
“I’ve got books up here my tablet sitting there, water bottle, day timer. This thing you can put a 20 pound weight on,” Cooper said.
Many people spend more than 8 hours a day just sitting at their desk. That can cause problems with your legs and your back.
Doctors say most people consider themselves “active” when at work, but just because your mind is busy. But that doesn’t mean your body is.
“A study showed that if you have a sedentary job and you sit more than 23 hours a week you’re going to have a 64 percent greater chance of having a heart attack,” said Dr. Richard Collins of South Denver Cardiology.
Cooper uses his treadmill desk on a regular basis to ward off the effects of just sitting still.
“I’d say about four hours a day is pretty standard at a slow pace. The longest I’ve ever gone is probably 14 or 15 miles in a day,” Cooper said.
There are limited benefits to moving at this slower pace, but doctors say it’s great for boosting the circulation in your legs and brain, and can actually keep you more alert on the job.
