Aurora Deputy Chief Terry Jones named interim chief; Oates takes Miami Beach job
AURORA, Colo. — Deputy Police Chief Terry Jones has been named interim police chief effective May 30. Current Chief Dan Oates resigned after he was hired to head up the Miami Beach, Fla. Police Department.
Oates served more than nine years in Aurora. He became a national figure during the Aurora Police Department’s response to the theater shooting in July 2012.
The city says it will conduct a national search for Oates’ replacement and intends to hire someone by the end of the year.
Jones has worked for the Aurora Police Department for 35 years. He’s been deputy chief since 2002. He served as interim police chief in 2005 prior to the hiring of Dan Oates.
