JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. — Derrick Fransua was sentenced to 13 years Thursday for the hit-and-run death of 15-year-old Gerard Julien last summer.

Fransua’s conviction was for “leaving the scene of an accident involving death.”  The now-22-year-old pleaded guilty to the charge in February.

Court documents say that Julien was attempting to cross Kipling Street in Lakewood. He was in the crosswalk and had the right-of-way when he was struck by Fransua’s PT Cruiser.  Fransua drove to his parents’ house. Julien died at the scene.

Julien was preparing to go to military school in the fall.  He had aspirations of becoming a Navy SEAL or Air Force pilot.

The convict addressed the court during his sentencing and apologized to Julien’s family and friends.

Shortly after the judge handed down the sentence Fransua was handcuffed and taken away.
