DENVER — The City Council approved historic landmark status late Monday night for a historic church in Denver’s West Highlands neighborhood.

Eden Baptist Church had been at the center of a debate about whether it should receive the designation.

The decision will limit development on and around the site of the 75-year-old abandoned church in the Highlands.

The owner of the property was against the move. The owner wanted to build apartments or condos on the site.

Many of the neighbors wanted preservation instead.
