DENVER — Firefighters put out a burning truckload of trash after it was dumped into a parking lot Monday morning.
Jeff Williams of Arvada, the driver of an Alpine Waste & Recycling truck, smelled the fire and quickly found a wide-open space in a parking lot at East Hampden Avenue and Happy Canyon Road and dumped the trash.
“Unfortunately, customers sometimes leave smoldering loads that end up in the back of our trucks, and then our drivers have to think quickly to keep everyone safe,” said Alek Orloff, chief financial officer of Alpine Waste & Recycling in Commerce City. “Mr. Williams handled it exactly the way he has been trained, and we are thankful to have such skilled workers at Alpine Waste & Recycling.”
There were no injuries in the incident, which happened about 6:45 a.m. Monday.
“We are very proud of Mr. Williams, and I would have to say he is certainly a candidate for our ‘Driver of the Month’ award,” said Shannon Smith, Alpine’s hauling general manager.
