LARIMER COUNTY, Colo. — The identities of the teen and his uncle who drowned in the Poudre River Memorial Day were released by the coroner’s office Tuesday afternoon.

The Larimer County Coroner’s Office identified 14-year-olf Christopher BrianĀ  Alania Canto of Greeley and 38-year-old Jose Antonio Terrel-Pena of Evans as the two victims in Monday’s incident.

Autopsies were completed on both individuals.

A coroner ruled Alania’s death accidental and said the cause of death was asphyxia by drowning and blunt force head injury. Terrel Pena’s death was also ruled accidental and the cause of death was drowning.

Alania fell into the river and drowned while fishing with friends and family on Memorial Day near the Ouzel campground and picnic area of Poudre Canyon.

The boy’s uncle attempted to rescue his nephew from the rapidly moving waters.

A good Samaritan pulled an unconscious Terrel Pena from the water. He was then transported to a hospital where he died.

Kayakers found the body of Alania at about 4:30 p.m. Monday, eight miles south and east of where the teen reportedly fell into the waters.

His mother sadly says, “I’ll be using his college fund to bury him.”

The family of the two who drowned have set up a memorial fund at Wells Fargo bank in honor of Christopher Alania and Terrel Pena. If you would like to donate, contact any Wells Fargo branch and mention the account in their names.
