VIDEO: Plane nearly lands on German sunbather

HELIGOLAND, Germany — One of the beaches on Heligoland, an island off Germany’s northern coast, is located right next to a small airport — emphasis on the word right, as a sunbather found out over the weekend.

A small apparently plane coming in too low for a landing nearly end up crushing a man sunbathing just feet from the beginning of the airport’s runway.

The plane appears to just miss touching its wheels on the sunbather’s back before taking off part of the fence in front of the runway and touching down. And it was all caught on video by 52-year-old Rainer Schmidt.

“I had seen five planes land before this one came in, and I instantly realized this one was coming in to land far too low,” Schmidt told the Daily Telegraph. “The others were at least six meters higher.”

According to the description posted on the initial YouTube video of the close call, the pilot of the plane was 52-year-old Juergen Drucker, who reportedly apologized for the close call.

“As the pictures show, that it wasn’t one of my greatest achievements in the cockpit,” Drucker said, according to the description posted with the original YouTube video. “In my defense I can say that I didn’t see him because he was lying down and I’m just very grateful it worked out well and I didn’t land on him.”
