FRANKTOWN, Colo. -- A huge house fire forced the closure Highway 83 late Monday night and early Tuesday morning in Douglas County. The highway has reopened and crews were still mopping up the fire Tuesday morning.
The fire broke out after 10 p.m. at Colorado 83 and Steeplechase Drive and quickly engulfed the 4,000-square-foot home, and huge flames could be seen coming from it. No one was home at the time, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.
The Franktown Fire Department said the home was in an area with no fire hydrants and water had to be hauled in from 7 miles away. Elizabeth Fire, Castle Rock Fire and South Metro Fire were the main aid departments that helped put out the fire and keep it from spreading to other structures.
The home was declared a total loss. There were no injures reported.
