EDGEWATER, Colo. -- A 16-year-old who was kidnapped in Edgewater on Wednesday night was able to escape about 2 1/2 hours later in Aurora by stabbing her alleged abductor.
The girl was going to her home in Lakewood from Wheat Ridge when she was approached by a man as she was about to board a bus near West 35th Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard, the Edgewater Police Department said.
The man asked for directions to Sloan's Lake and offered the girl a ride in his vehicle, and she accepted. As they approached the girl's residence near West 17th Avenue and Eaton Street in Lakewood, the man pulled into an alley near West 22nd Avenue and Benton Street in Edgewater and pulled out a knife, police said.
The girl was then bound with rope and the suspect drove away from the area. The girl told police she estimated the man drove for at least an hour on a road later identified as Interstate 225 in the Aurora area.
The girl was able to open the passenger door and stick out her lower legs in an unsuccessful attempt to alert another driver that she needed assistance. She later freed one of her hands from the ropes and found the suspect's knife on the floorboard. She grabbed it and started stabbing the suspect in what she believes was the left shoulder and rib cage area, police said.
When the suspect stopped the vehicle, the girl got out and ran off through an exit in the sound barrier walls on I-225 to a residence near I-225 and Sand Creek Road. The Aurora Police Department responded to the kidnapping call about 10 p.m.
Police said the girl suffered lacerations to her right fingers that occurred as she was stabbing the suspect. She went to a local hospital where she was treated and released.
The suspect is described as a black male, age 30 to 40 with clean-cut facial hair that included gray chin hair. He has short clean-cut hair or is bald and was wearing a brown or green and white striped short-sleeve shirt and dark pants, police said.
He was driving a dark blue or black late model diesel pickup truck with a chrome stripe on the bottom of the sides and amber running lights on top.
Anyone with information about the suspect or his vehicle is asked to call Det. Joseph Montoya at 720-763-3025, the Edgewater Police Department at 303-235-5055 or the Jefferson County dispatch center at 303-271-0211.
